What is Migraine?

Migraine is a prevalent neurological disorder. Despite the exact cause being unknown, it is believed to be due to a problem in the pain system of the brain. Migraine is often considered to have a genetic component and is characterized by intense pain in one specific area of the head.

What Are Migraine Symptoms?

Migraine usually occurs with symptoms such as;

  • Severe pain on one side of the head

  • Sudden vision loss

  • Bright flashes of light in the eyes

  • Numbness in arms and legs

  • Speech disorder (rare)

  • Light sensitivity

How is Migraine Diagnosed?

vFor the diagnosis of migraine, primarily neurological examinations are performed. If necessary, examinations such as blood analysis, brain tomography, and MRI (Magnetic Resonance) are also performed. The patient should convey the pain graph and shape to the specialist physician. After the examination, the patient may be asked to keep a pain diary. In this pain diary; There are data such as the severity, duration, and frequency of the pain. Thus, different headaches seen in the patient can be distinguished.

How Is Migraine Treated?

Migraine treatment; is divided into two attack treatment and preventive treatment. In treating attacks, treatment is primarily applied to relieve the headache. Depending on the type and severity of the pain, several steps of pain relief treatment are applied. This treatment method is applied to people who have attacks 2-3 times a month.

In preventive treatment, it is aimed to prevent migraine pain before it starts. Depending on the severity and type of pain, the patient uses medication continuously for several months. Trigger effects of migraine attacks and whether there are other diseases are investigated.

Besides these treatments, Botulinum toxin treatment has also been applied since 2010. In this treatment, pain points are first determined, and then the injection is applied from 31 points. The positive effects of the treatment begin to be seen after about a week. It can be repeated every three months during the treatment process, depending on the pain condition.

In addition, one of the most critical developments in the treatment of migraine recently; is the “migraine vaccine” that protects against chronic migraine disease. This treatment method, which has been used for about two years, is new, which causes it to be more expensive than other treatments. It is thought that a new stage has been reached in the treatment methods using the migraine vaccine.
